Jim The Fisherman

This is an acrylic painting on canvas. The subject is my late husband who was a keen freshwater fisherman. He loved nothing better than camping on the banks of the Murray River,with boat,plenty of bait and fishing from first light until sundown. During the long summer holidays, our two girls and I usually joined him...sometimes fishing, but also swimming and water skiing. The Old Goulburn bridge at Trawool

This old wooden bridge was removed a few years back and was replaced with a modern concrete structure. The old bridge was fondly remembered by many who lived in the area. As a child I remember swimming there in the summer, when the river was low. The river was a popular fishing place and the bridge provided good shelter from the heat in the summer...also, large Murray Cod used to linger amongst the snags. Many family picnics were enjoyed in the area... Today, the highway is much busier...people don't frequent this spot like they used to .

The delft blue jug belonged to my mother. During WW2 she saved coupons from a company (maybe Cadbury Cocoa) When she had the required number, she was able to choose on item to a certain value.She chose this jug.I remember that she used to make cocoa in this jug, which also has a lid to keep the cocoa warm. I always loved the shape and colour of this jug, so it was an easy choice for part of this stlll life oil painting. Under the Old Avenel Bridge

This is a view from under the old stone bridge at Avenel , Victoria, Australia.The bridge was built by convict labour across the Hughes Creek which was on the main highway between Melbourne and Sydney. This was a bit of fun. I poured some liquid acrylics onto the canvas board.Allowed it to dry and then decided what I would create. The pour reminded me of the decorative Art Nouveau Style of painting, so I decided to go with that idea and made the image into trees.Australian gum tree saplings...and also a reminder of the beauty and the terror which can occur in nature.

Beating the Heat

I was looking through some images from the past few years and came across this one. I painted it about between eighteen months and two years ago.It is our elderly cat John, (since deceased). He was rushing indoors to get away from the heat...it was another total fireban day with fires close to where we live. Again, we are facing the same dangers, only much worse....our state is so dreadfully dry from the long drought conditions. The firefighters and other emergency services are doing a magnificent job against terrible odds....we are all on alert!

Hanging Rock

I had almost forgotten that I had this one... It was painted about six years ago after a visit to Hanging Rock, an interesting outcrop of rocks near Mt Macedon in Victoria, Australia. There is a novel about this rather unusual area. "Picnic at Hanging Rock" was written by Joan Lindsay and was published in 1967.A film of the same name was made in 1975. The story is set in about 1900. A party of school girls, from a nearby boarding school, were picknicking there ...two of them disappeared with out a trace. This pastel is actually a self portrait. The only thing I changed was my hair colour. I was quite a lot younger then and knitting and sewing for the children took up most of my spare time....painting took a back seat until Target Stores came to town. Thank you to Target for freeing me up so I could paint!! This work is now part of the Permanent Collection of the local Art Society.

The Old Goulburn Bridge

This painting is another from my archives. This time an oil on canvas! The Goulburn River virtually circles our town. It is a very beautiful river, with plenty of fish and river crays. My husband was a keen fisherman and loved fishing this river. The bridge is very old (mid to late 1800's)and needs much expensive renovation....it is intended to keep it as part of the very popular walking track. Our local Art Society recently held an exhibition featuring paintings of this old bridge. We donated the proceeds towards it's renovation. It seems as though our efforts( and the efforts of many others in the community) was successful, and now, with extra money from the Shire and the government, this beautiful old structure will survive SOLD

I have been "playing" with watercolour on yupo...Relaxing , experimenting and enjoying is probably a more accurate description. My reference is a photograph I took at a meeting...not at all a likeness of the woman nor the room...simply a starting point. Yupo is fun to use... watercolour doesn't sink in to the "plastic" surface and "mistakes' are easily removed. For this image, I used a foam roller,to blend colours, a window squee-gee for lines and to move some paint about, a waterspray and crumpled tissues for textures.

Beside the Sea

This painting came about from a challenge on Wet canvas.The subject for the challenge was quite a complicated and "busy" photograph of what appeared to be a Mediterranean Resort. Aiming to retain the feel of the Mediterranean warmth, I cropped the image and simplified the background in order to focus on the pots and the brilliant flowering shrubs. This is painted in acrylics.

The Deep

This is my most recent painting. It is an acrylic painting . Overall size is approximately 24''x 16''

The smaller rectangular section is painted on Yupo which is a synthetic "paper" manufactured in Japan. I sent for a sample pack from the company and received a number of A4 sheets in various weights.

Painting on Yupo is not like any other surface. The paint crawls and clumps in a most unpredictable manner. It is fun to use and after some practise, it becomes a bit easier to manage.

The texture in this central shape was obtained by pressing cling wrap into the wet acrylic paint. When dry the cling wrap was removed to reveal the textured surface.

The blue toned background to the textured rectangle is Acrylic paint on Arches rough 300gsm.

This was painted some time back. I found it recently and decided it might be worth keeping. The day was blustery and cool. My husband was fishing on the beach ,so I took refuge in the sand dunes and did a couple of quick paintings. The other one was sold. Yambuck is on the south west coast of Victoria, Australia, not far from the historic and beautiful town of Port Fairy.

More rocks! This time they come from the hills above the river in the picturesque Goulburn Valley. These rocks , like "River Rocks"are of granite. There is an abundance of these rocky outcrops in the region. Medium : Watercolour.on Arches rough 300gms. Art Spectrum watercolour paints.

The Goulburn River passes through granite country. These rocks are close to the river bank and extend into the water.This is a good river to fish for trout in the upper reaches and Murray cod in the lower reaches, toward the Murray River. The painting is acrylic on gallery wrapped canvas.

The river near our town is a source of great pleasure to fishermen as well as other forms of sport.These young people were on a day trip with their school. I thought that they made an interesting subject for a painting. Pastel on toned paper.

Drought.

Today, it is raining! It has been raining all day! I hope it rains quite a lot more and breaks the drought that has plagued our district for approximately ten years. This is a watercolour which I painted two years ago.It shows the effect of this current drought on one of our popular water resorts. The water has long gone and old drowned landscapes have emerged....dead gumtrees and in some places, the ghostly remains of early settlers dwellings. Eppalock is a lake near Bendigo, in central Victoria, Australia. It was a huge expanse of water. Originally a natural depression with a couple of minor rivers, it was dammed about fifty years ago and filled very quicly to create a sancturary for wild life, recreational waterway for Victorians for many years. This is how it looks today.
